The City of Pomona Wastewater Operations Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of an extensive wastewater collection system and is tasked with ensuring proper and efficient operation of the system. The City provides sewer service throughout the City and to a limited area outside the City limits.

The City’s wastewater collection system consists of approximately 317 miles of gravity sewer, 4 pump stations maintained by Los Angeles County Sanitation District (LACSD), 1.4 miles of force mains, over 6,000 manholes and two siphons.

Sewage collected by the City’s wastewater collection system is conveyed to the Pomona Water Reclamation Plant (PWRP) for treatment and disposal under the authority of the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (LACSD).

The City is dedicated to improving the condition and performance of its wastewater collection system and reducing the occurrences of sanitary sewer overflows.

No Wipes in the Pipes

The Covid-19 crisis is having an unintended consequence on the local sewer system and City of Pomona residents are being asked to stop flushing wipes or anything else that is not toilet paper.

As the news of toilet paper shortages continues, we have seen an increase in the number of wipes, napkins, and rags in the sewer system. Wipes are among the leading causes of sewer system backups.

This is a good time to re-emphasize that there is no such thing as “flushable” wipes.

“Flushable” or disinfecting wipes do not break down like toilet paper and they will clog sewer interceptors, pipes, and pumps.

The California Water Board is advising “Flushing wipes, paper towels and similar products down toilets will clog sewers and cause backups and overflows at wastewater treatment facilities, creating an additional public health risk in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.”

During an inspections of the City's sewer manhole staff saw an increased number of wipes, napkins, rags, and other debris in the system.

City of Pomona residents are being asked to stop flushing wipes or anything else that is not toilet paper.

If wipes are used, they should be thrown in the trash, not down the toilet,” stated City of Pomona Wastewater staff.

When in doubt, residents are asked to remember the 3 P’s.

Only flush Pee, Poop and toilet Paper.

Anything else should go in a trash receptacle.

2012 Sewer System Overview

A Sewer System updated was presented to City Council in 2012. The document describes the City’s Sewer System and the successful efforts of staff to maintain it in such a fashion that it helps to minimize Sanitary Sewer Overflows.
