Major Crimes Task Force
After experiencing an increase in narcotics activity and gang violence during the 1980’s, the Pomona Police Department formed a team of officers to combat serious crimes. Primarily, the team has a mission to conduct high visibility proactive patrols in areas known to have a reputation for criminal activity; however, it is also capable of operating undercover. The Police Department relies heavily upon the Major Crimes Task Force (MCTF) to suppress gang violence, investigate drug offenses, and pursue wanted persons. MCTF works closely with neighboring police agencies and various law enforcement branches such as, the California Department of Corrections and the Los Angeles Probation Department. Currently, the team is comprised of two supervisors and four officers.
Special Investigations Unit
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is a component of the Major Crimes Unit, which serves as a flexible resource responsible for the proactive enforcement and suppression of violent crimes, gang activity, narcotic sales, marijuana dispensaries, illegal marijuana grows, and fugitive apprehension. The team bridges the investigative gaps between the Detective Bureau and the investigation itself. The Special Investigations Unit routinely provides surveillance and additional investigative follow up on investigative crimes by the Detective Bureau. The team is comprised of four Police Officers, one Corporal, and one Sergeant. The team also has two additional officers who are a part of the Sexual Exploitation Trafficking Team (SETT) who deal with human trafficking investigations and the team has one full time LA County Probation Officer.
The team members have all previously served on investigative task forces, specialized units or narcotics teams, which brings a plethora of experience to the investigations. SIU is equipped and staffed in such a manner that they are a self-sufficient unit capable of adapting to a variety of situations. The SIU commonly operates in a discrete manner while addressing the needs of the department and community.
